www.festivalensemble.org stands for Festivalensemble Stuttgart –
an annual project organised by the Internationale Bachakademie
Stuttgart and sponsored exclusively by E.ON AG. The ensemble was
founded in 2001 by Helmuth Rilling and has rapidly developed into one
of Europe´s leading ensembles of its kind. A two week rehearsal period
by Lake Constance in southern Germany is followed by two weeks of
performing at the Musikfest Stuttgart and at other prestigious music
festivals within Germany and Europe.

In summer 2009 we will celebrate the 250th anniversary of Georg Frederic Handel’s death in a two-fold way: his wonderful oratorio MESSIAH will be our main subject for four weeks but will also be complemented by a newly composed MESSIAH! This new MESSIAH is a work for orchestra and choir commissioned by the Internationale Bachakademie Stuttgart and composed by renowned and much acclaimed Swedish composer Sven-David Sandström. The European premiere of this piece will be with the FES in the Eberbach Monastery’s Basilica – an appropriate location we think! Next day follows Handel’s MESSIAH in the same grandiose church room. After so many years’ trying FES will finally make it back to Germany’s Capital Berlin! Two concerts in the spectacular Berlin Philharmony as an epilogue to a wonderful festival, young.euro.classic and three nights in Berlin. Before we reach the final stage in Stuttgart’s Liederhalle FES is invited to perform Handel’s Messiah in the small town of Homburg at the river Saar. Musikfest Stuttgart – the annual music festival organised by the Bachakademie and the major classical music event in the city of Stuttgart – will hear and see the Festivalensemble for two concerts on their opening weekend September 5 & 6. The second concert, Sandström for the last time, will be recorded “live” and released on CD later.
